LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Interest in a new book about Navy SEAL Team Six is sky-rocketing in the wake of the killing of Osama bin Laden by members of the elite U.S. special force.

"SEAL Team Six: Memoirs of an Elite Navy SEAL Sniper" is being rushed into U.S. stores this week ahead of its originally scheduled May 24 publication date.

A representative for publisher St. Martin's Press said it has almost quadrupled the print run to 70,000 copies to meet the demand.

Independent journalism site True/Slant, founded a year ago by former AOL news executive Lewis DVorkin, has been acquired by relatively deep-pocketed publisher Forbes Media. Terms of the deal have not become available yet, but Forbes is expected to use True/Slant as a “blog farm” to grow stories that Forbes can redistribute.

When DVorkin enthusiastically launched True/Slant in April 2009, he envisioned a site that would serve as a publication to which individual journalists — specifically, the thousands of newspaper reporters and columnists being laid off everywhere — could contribute and be paid. Authors against DRM PDF Print E-mail

Authors for DRM FreeDRM (Digital Rights Management) is a catch all word that refers to software and/or hardware technology that keeps you from sharing the digital media you have bought. DRM is used to prevent the piracy of ebooks, music and video files but has not been found to be effective, although many different forms have been tried over the years.

What DRM has been effective at, is sparking much anger by consumers who have found that DRM makes it difficult to share digital files they have legally bought between devices and that DRM cause conflicts in playing or reading the files.

Now authors are fighting against DRM as they feel that DRM not only doesn’t prevent their books from being pirated but also causes customers to shy away from their ebooks because of the troubles DRM creates.

These authors have gathered to form ReadersBillofRights.info. You can find more information about their movement at their site.

The book is dead -long live the ebook PDF Print E-mail

I recently managed to generate some controversy in the usually quiet and conservative world of CanLit by publishing a book.

The book itself isn't controversial -it's the way I decided to put it out.

I self-published it as an ebook. Or rather, I republished it as an ebook. The book, Please, was my first novel and was originally published as a paperback by Vancouver's Raincoast press a few years back. It went on to do wonderful things, including winning the ReLit prize for Canada's best alternative novel. So when it went out of print, the logical thing would have been to find another publisher and get it back into bookstores, not self-publish it as an ebook, right?

Well, maybe. A lot of other people certainly thought so. I received messages telling me I was mad, that selfpublishing is for wannabe, amateur writers only, that ebooks are killing "real" books and that such a move will hurt my career.

I think the critics are wrong. Why? Because of the ebook revolution.
