Most people will never get past the first words of this article. To them, speaking to an audience about their book is just too scary. Unfortunately they can be missing one of the best book promotion activities ever. All over the world there are thousands groups of people who meet for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is a convention of Doctors, Lawyers, Business People, Authors etc or it could be just a small local group of Quilters, Photographers, Chamber of Commerce, Business Leads Group and many, many more.
ALL OF THESE GROUPS are always looking for speakers to for their meetings. Sometimes the time allotment they have for a speaker is short, like 10 - 15 minutes, other times it is longer like 45 minutes. Most authors cannot walk in off the street and talk to an audience, in any sort of lucid manner, for 45 minutes at a time. It take practice to get to the point that you can talk meaningful for 45 minutes ... BUT, most authors COULD speak to an audience for say 10 minutes. That is, if they are not terrified to do so. Taking your book promotion to a new and exciting level can mean becoming a public speaker. There are a variety of different places where you can learn and practice the art of public speaking. Aside from a plethora of private businesses, there is also organizations like Toastmasters International who boast a membership of over one quarter million members around the world. An excellent organization who have helped many well known speakers to get their speaking and leadership careers started. Dale Carnegie Business Group is another highly valued group that teach speaking along with other leadership skills. There are also often local groups, rec centers and community centers that will put on public speaking courses. All of these are a great place to start if you really want to promote your book. Start off small and work your way up, I am pretty sure you will be astounded at what you can achieve in both speaking and promoting your book. Being an author is all about personal growth and what better way to achieve this than by helping others along the way.
