Self Publishing Guide
One of the first jobs in long line of careers was “working retail”. I was always the person who had to “close” or “cash out” at the end of the day, which meant counting the cash and receipts in the till, and having to balance the cash against what we sold that day. The cash and the till receipts almost never balanced and trying to find the tiny errors was a real chore, especially at the end of a long day. These are the lessons that served me well later on when I was called upon to edit books.
I very often hear authors who tell me “they are going to edit their own books”. This is really bad idea if they want their books to have ANY chance of success by putting out a quality book. Slightly better (sometimes) is that they are going to get “a friend” or “relative” to do the editing. I get emails and letters from my friends and family, and they are all lovely, well educated people, but based on the quality of their writings, they do not have the capability for editing a book.
Editing a book takes more than just looking at sentences and paragraphs and making them sound right. It takes someone who can look at the author's intent and make a determination if the sentence or paragraphs should be left the way it is in order to maintain the “feel” of the book.
Every author I have ever spoken with wants to have their book listed on Amazon, and a few I know have already accomplished getting a listing. Of the very few who actually got their book listed on Amazon, I always ask, and how many books have they sold for you? I can tell you that their responses have been very disappointing.
So, you want to get your book listed on Amazon? Tell me, why do you want to do this? Ah, you think getting your book listed on Amazon will automatically get you noticed and of course you will start selling hundreds, maybe even thousands of books.
The truth is, getting your book listed on Amazon is of little use unless YOU are going to promote it;s sales, no matter where it is listed and sold. Think about this for a moment, Amazon currently has in excess of 250,000 books listed on their website. Unless someone is actually looking for your title or your name as the author, or possibly some kind of description, of what the book is about, what do you think the odds of them coming across your book actually are? I can tell you from experience, they are pretty slim.
If you're a writer who has opted to go with a self publishing model, there is the potential for you to write, edit, proof-read and typeset your own work completely. But unless you also own a printing company, this job is one that should get left completely to the specialists.
You will need to understand that when you print a book there is the potential for many high-priced complications that may happen in the printing process. That is the reason why you should join up with a printing company that specializes specifically with books; not the ones that also do business cards or letterheads, but the book printing corporations that only focus on books, day in day out.
Before meeting with book printers, here are some of the questions that you need to ask:
What size are you wanting your book?
There are a variety of different sizes and you've got the choice to make your book any size you would like, but you must note the printing presses are made for certain dimensions A-size; B-size, B-plus, C-format, Quarto; and so on. While you can customize your dimensions, it is strongly recommended to follow the set dimensions or you will find yourself paying for the bigger size with wasted space at the sides.
